DOES WASHING A FACE MASK MAKE IT LESS EFFECTIVE?

Our Ecomask face masks are re-usable including the filter and can be washed without damaging the air filtering effectiveness. The filter is sewn into the mask and is not replaceable.

Many filters cannot be washed and maintain their effectiveness. This is the difference between what type of material is used to construct the filter. Most high quality filters are made from either meltblown or spunbond material.

Meltblown filters cannot be washed without a loss in quality but the spunbond ones can be cleaned and maintain their effectiveness.

How to wash your mask?

Rinse outer and inner layers with warm water, add a small amount of liquid soap and gently rub. Rinse again and hang to fully dry before storage or use.  Sunlight exposure is a great way to keep your mask clean and fresh.

Cleaning will not decrease the mask effectiveness as long as the mask is not damaged in the process.

When to wash your mask?

Ecomask recommends hand washing your mask once per week. The life of your mask will depend on how much you wear it and how well you care for it.

If you notice any odor or taste while wearing your mask that means the filter needs to be cleaned. We recommend to replace your mask every 3 months. If any part or assembly of the mask is damaged, or if a good seal is not achievable, discard the mask.

Why isn't the filter replaceable?

When we set out to make a sustainable face mask our team studied a lot of different masks on the market. At Ecomask our research proved the respirator style mask is the best at filtering air so we based our mask shape on the N95 style.

This was important because we didn't want people to have to chose between a sustainable mask and an effective one. No trade offs.

Cloth masks with replaceable filters were the most sustainable option we could find before we launched. After studying the data, our team realized there was a tradeoff with these masks. They weren't as good at keeping you safe because air can just flow around a filter that's not stitched into place.

In order to deliver a mask with no trade offs we used a high quality FFP2 filter that can be washed without a degradation of quality, stitched it into place and protected it with the right materials to keep it usable for a longer period of time.

We're telling you exactly what is in our secret sauce because we believe knowledge is power. Knowing the whys behind our design might help someone make an important decision about what kind of mask to use.
